As one of the early students in the IBM Academic Initiative program for RPG programming at Vaal University of Technology, Richard has a passion for RPG and the IBM i platform that is obvious when you talk with him. He has taken on the role of chairperson for the YiPs in South Africa, and is also a board member of COMMON Africa.

Richard is instrumental in the YiPs organization in South Africa, searching for opportunities for the students and graduates of the RPG programming class, working with companies in South Africa for job opportunities for YiPs, leading by example, and inspiring his fellow YiPs. He is also working as an intern for a joint venture with Hyphen and Tembo Technology Lab.

A visit for Richard to the COMMON 2010 Annual Meeting and Exposition has been arranged. He will meet many people on his visit - IBMers responsible for the Academic Initiative, several IBM executives, COMMON North America board members, board members from sister user groups around the world, COMMON Education Foundation board members, fellow YiPs from around the globe, not to mention all the COMMON conference attendees. He will also have an opportunity to attend conference sessions, and add to his RPG skills.

Most of the students and YiPs are working hard to simply make ends meet. To assist with Richard making the trip to Orlando, a group of community members have arranged for sponsors to cover his airfare, hotel and living expenses. Two specific companies are responsible for assisting in this venture - thanks go to the IBM Power Systems group and looksoftware.

If you see Richard at the COMMON conference, be sure to say hi.
